August 2, 2021

Dear HMS Students, Parent and Guardians:

On behalf of the faculty and staff of HMS it is my pleasure to extend an early-August welcome to our incoming 7th grade class and returning 8th graders in anticipation of the new school year.  Though we still have plenty of summer to enjoy, here are a few updates and reminders of what is on tap throughout this month as we gear up for opening day on September 8th.

Summer Reading

If you haven’t started a summer read yet, now is the time to get started.  All HMS students are required to complete one of the summer reading selections for their respective grade.  There are a variety of choices available across a range of reading levels and genres from science fiction, fantasy, comedy, biography, classics, etc.  Visit the HMS website for complete details or click:  HMS Summer Reading.

Chromebook Distribution

Chromebooks for all students in grades 5-12 will be available for pick-up at HMS during the last week of August.  Look for more information to come soon via SchoolMessenger and on the district website with details on the exact dates/times and procedures for Chromebook pick-up.  Students who are unable to pick-up their Chromebooks prior to the start of school will receive them in school on September 8th during our extended homeroom.

Student Schedules

Tentative schedules that include each student’s team, homeroom, locker & combination will post in Genesis after 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, August 24th.  Keep in mind that schedules are subject to change up until the first day of school, September 8th, when students will receive official/final schedules during extended homeroom that morning.

Bus Information

Student bus routes/times will be listed in Genesis during the last on or about August 27th.  Note that students in grades 7-8 who are within a 2 mile radius of HMS along a safe walking corridor to the school do not receive transportation services.  Questions or concerns regarding transportation should be directed to the district Transportation Department (908-431-6600, prompt #6).

School Supplies

We do not produce individual teacher lists of school supplies, however, we have prepared a checklist of recommended and suggested supplies along with important tips for what students need to succeed at HMS posted on our website.  See:  HMS School Supplies

Open House

Subject to completion of renovation projects currently underway at HMS, we have tentatively scheduled two dates for Open Houses - Wednesday, August 25th (7th grade) and Thursday, August 26th (8th grade) from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm.  Students, accompanied by an adult, are welcome to visit HMS during those times for self-guided tours to become reacquainted with the location of classrooms, common areas, and to practice opening lockers, etc.  The HMS Home & School Association will be on hand with RaiderWear and information for the upcoming school year.  Please note that teachers are not scheduled to be present during these open house events as they do not report to school until September 1st.

Parent/Student Orientations

All students will receive orientation to HMS during a 90-minute extended homeroom with their team teachers on the first day of school (September 8th) before they begin an abbreviated rotation of classes.  Look for additional information for both parents and students to be broadcast online the week of August 23rd and posted to our HMS website that will provide answers to the most frequently asked questions on everyone’s mind for the new school year at HMS prior to opening day.

Health Office

HMS school nurse, Mrs. Williams, will be available to receive medication forms and medications in advance of the upcoming school year, August 24-26th between 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.  Please note the following forms must be newly submitted prior to the beginning of each school year if applicable for your child: Asthma treatment plans, Diabetic care plans and physician orders, Epinephrine medication forms, Seizure Action plans, and medication request forms for medication that will need to be available at school (including self-carry/self-administration orders for inhalers and Epinephrine auto-injectors).

HMS Summer Office Hours

Our offices will be CLOSED the week of August 9-13th and will re-open for the 2021-22 school year on August 16th, weekdays from 8:00 am - 3:00 pm.

Continue to enjoy a safe and fun-filled, relaxing summer.  More details regarding the new school year will roll out as we get closer to Labor Day.

Sincerely,

Joseph Trybulski, Ed.D.
