Yuda Band Project

The Hillsborough Middle School (HMS) Student Council is proud to announce our participation in the Yuda Band project (http://www.yudabands.org).   Yuda Band is a community service program to promote fair trade and the funding of scholarships for disadvantaged students in other countries. Via the Yuda Band Organization, the HMS Student Council has connected with an 8th grade student named Evelyn in Guatemala and will be selling handmade Yuda band bracelets to help raise money on her behalf that will enable her to continue her high school education.

The HMS Student Council aims to sell 300 bracelets in order to provide Evelyn with a scholarship. On February 1, students were introduced to Evelyn via Skype. Through a translator, they were able to ask her questions about everything from her family and daily life in Guatemala to what inspires her and what she would like to do in the future.

HMS Student Council members will be selling the handmade Yuda Bands for $7 each from February 8 to February 22 with all proceeds going directly to the Yuda Band fund for Evelyn. The bracelets can be purchased from a Student Council member or by emailing the advisors Mrs. JoAnn Getz at [email protected] or Mr. Tom Sharples at [email protected].

The following local businesses will also provide a discount to Yuda Band wearers.

Angelo’s pizza  - $1 off a large pie

Just Subs - $0.50 off a half sub or $1 off a whole sub

Super Sundaes - 20% off during the month of April

“I am so proud of this Student Council and particularly of their charitable efforts to make a global connection that is still very personal as well.  They are not just helping a fellow student in a far off country and her local community.  They are recognizing the universal value of education in all of our lives and showing that our community can extend well beyond our borders,” says Dr. Joseph Trybulski, principal of Hillsborough Middle School.
