The Misfits Reading Contest

All HMS literacy classes have received copies of The Misfits by James Howe - a realistic fiction novel about the power of words to hurt or heal.  Students can borrow copies of the book or access from the HMS library or Hillsborough Public Library between now and June.  Free audio versions of the novel are also available online.

Once you have finished the book, students must respond to a few short questions on this Google Form:

The Misfits Reading Contest Reflection Form

Individuals who read the book and complete the reflection response will be entered into a raffle to win a Rita's Ice gift card.  Literacy classes with 100% participation reading the book by June will win a Rita's Flavored Ice Party.

No Name Calling Week was inspired by James Howe’s novel The Misfits, about four friends’ efforts to survive middle school in the face of teasing about their looks, intelligence and sexual orientation.  They decide to run for student council as the “No Name Party.” Motivated by this simple yet powerful idea, “No Name-Calling Week” began in 2004, and is now sponsored by over 60 national partner organizations.   http://glsen.org/nonamecallingweek
