Students who want to participate in this years Somerset County Teen Arts Festival should see the bulletin board outside C13 to get an application and an other information sheets. All final writing pieces are due by February 12 and all applications are due by February 14. Please email Mrs. Presuto with questions.
Next week is the 17th annual "No Name Calling Week" which highlights the power of words to hurt or heal. HMS is sponsoring a reading contest based on the novel that started No Name-Calling Week - "The Misfits" by James Howe. Visit the HMS website or ask your literacy teacher for more information about the contest and prizes. We will also hold several spirit days to commemorate the week - stay tuned for details!
This is a reminder that the HMS Ping-Pong Club is about to begin. Come and join the fun after school every Monday or Wednesday, depending on which division you choose. The first Ping Pong Club meetings are Monday, January 27th and Wednesday, January 29th. Please see Mr. Machat in room B3 or the other Mr. Machat in room A8 for a club permission slip.
Hurry, membership is limited and the club fills up quickly.
Congratulations to our Hillsborough Middle School Science Olympiad Team! Yesterday the team did a fantastic job in the regional competition and placed top 6 in 7 events. Machines and Anatomy & Physiology placed top first and second. 15 medals were given out to the team. Great Job Team!
This Monday, January 20th, is a federal holiday to honor the life and legacy of the great American civil rights leader, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Dr. King devoted his life to the cause of equality and social justice. He dedicated his himself to the service of others and to encourage us all to dedicate some of ourselves to each other so that problems such as hunger and homelessness, prejudice and discrimination can be overcome.
In the summer of 1963, he stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial before tens of thousands who had marched on Washington that day and spoke to them of a dream of a better, more just, diverse, and united America. Much has changed for the better in the years since, but there is still so much yet to be done.
The best way we can honor his legacy and the sacrifices he made on behalf of our nation is to honor and serve one another. Consider these the words of Dr. King, "Life's most persistent and urgent question,” he said, “is what are you doing for others?" On Monday, in honor of Dr. King and this national day of service, take time to serve others at home, in school, youth group, or neighborhood...and in each small way, together, we can contribute to the change that brings his dream ever closer to reality for all.
