Battle of the Books Club
Ms. Dreher and Ms. Hanna
Before school ; Twice a month on Thursdays ; begins October

Battle of the Books is a fun and exciting way to read new and challenging books. You and your peers will discuss the events an details of the books on the given list and create questions to quiz each other in preparation for book battles. You will be quizzed in a Jeopardy like review for our final "battle" in the spring.

Debate Club
Ms. Rubin
3:15 - 4:15 p.m. ; Wednesdays ; begins October 5th

The debate club will explore debating rules, connections to students' lives, future careers, public speaking, character education and teamwork. The intent of this club is to be challenging, fun and educational. We will debate issues pertaining to: language arts, science,social studies, health, politics, government, HMS issues and psychology.

GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math & Science)

3:15 - 4:15p.m. ; Thursdays ; begins October (special events), January (regular meetings)

GEMS (Girls into Engineering, Math, and Science) Club is open to all 7th and 8th grade girls to explore the wonder and opportunities in STEM. This year we will investigate STEM topics through experiments, guest speakers, field trips, and contests.

History Club : American History Through Film
Mrs. Harmsen
After school ; Thursdays ; begins Thursday, September 29th, 2016

This club will span the course of American history through film. Each week we will watch a movie (or documentary) that highlights a time period in the American experience, starting with the Vikings to Jamestown and Plymouth through colonial times, the Civil War, the Gilded Age, two world wars and modern times. This club will have dual themes. Not only will we learn about American history by watching movies, we will also discuss how the filmmakers interpreted each time period, and what their portrayals say about the time in which each movie was made. The History Club will meet every Thursday from 3:10-5:30 (longer on certain days), starting September 29th, 2016, and ending on June 15th, 2017.

HMS Math Club

3:10 - 4:15p.m. ; Mondays - 2x a month ; begins November

The NJ Math League has a contest on each grade level in February. The Math League Club uses contests from previous years to prepare for this year's contest. All students are welcome to participate in the NJ Math League Contest whether or not they were able to attend club meetings. Club members will have an opportunity to participate in other math competitions during the school year.

National Geographic Bee
Mrs. Winters
Before school ; TBD ; begins October

Students will prepare to compete to represent HMS in the NJ National Geographic Bee held in the spring.

The Science Olympiad
Mr. McLean
After school ; Mondays & Fridays ; begins November

In this competitive club you will have the opportunity to try your intellect against others from schools across the state. You will have the chance to build a hovercraft to race, a tower to stand against opposition, a robotic arm to move and control playing pieces. You will pit your skills and memories against the doctors of tomorrow to see who knows the human body and all its intricacies better. You will try your hand against the memories of your competitors to prove that YOU know more about meteorology than any others, and many more competitive tasks as well!
